    About urban dreams (1999 - 2004)

Urban Dreams was a project of the Oakland Unified School District Office of Instructional Technology. It was funded by a five-year Federal Technology Innovation Grant awarded in 1999. The project was designed to support the work of History and English teachers, grades 9-12, by providing access to appropriate technology tools and professional development opportunities.

Its focus on teaching and learning about Human Rights and Civil Rights provided the thematic context through which students worked to improve their skills as readers and writers. Students and teachers explored this theme as it emerged in their study of history and their study of literature, as outlined in OUSD's content standards, and through the innovative use of technological resources. Participant teachers received the equipment necessary to support this work in their classrooms.

Urban Dreams worked with over 150 Oakland Unified teachers during the life of the grant. As participating teachers integrated new classroom technology and enhanced content knowledge into their lessons, the education of students in their classrooms was enriched. Additionally, Urban Dreams supported The Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute’s community access component. Through this program the institute placed computers in the homes of over 1200 students and provided training for their parents, thus strengthening the relationship between home, school and community.
