Description:

Jasmine, Mukherjee's most popularly read novel, stems from an earlier short story from The Middleman and Other Stories and was expanded to a story of a young widow who uproots herself from her life in India and re-roots herself in search of a new life and the image of America. This book follows a young girl named Jyoti, born in the state of Punjab in India. She is widowed by the time she is 17, and goes from being Jyoti to Jasmine to Jane Ripplemeyer, the wife of an Iowa banker. The details of Jasmine's past lives unfold slowly, allowing the reader to experience firsthand what it is to be an immigrant. More... (© Voices From the Gaps)
