Growing up poor, uneducated, and angry at the whole world, Bigger
Thomas seems destined to meet a bad fate. When Native Son
opens, Bigger is twenty years old. Anger, frustration, and violence
are a daily reality for him. He is a practiced criminal, having
committed numerous robberies with his friends. Unable to cope with
his wild mood swings, Bigger often erupts in fits of irrational,
violent temper. Bigger has grown up with the overwhelming conviction
that he simply has no control over his life. He cannot aspire to
