Lesson 3 Vocabulary Development

Objectives

  • To learn definitions of vocabulary words
  • To practice a pre-reading strategy

Materials

  • Vocabulary list  (set one) written on chart paper.
(NOTE: The teacher should select 8-10 words from each set.)

Procedure

  1. Tell students that the words are from the autobiography. Pronounce each one.
  2. Divide the class into groups and instruct each group to rate the words. Students should write each word and then next to each write either a definition or “have heard/seen it” for a word that they are vaguely familiar with, or “no clue” for words they are unfamiliar with.
  3. Lead the class in a discussion of the words, providing definitions and parts of speech. In preparation for the homework assignment, give examples of “context-rich” sentences; have students practice writing two sentences. Share with class.
  4. Explain to students that they will have weekly vocabulary quizzes and should review the words nightly on their own.

Homework assignment

Write context-rich sentences for words in set one.
