• copies of the “Negro National Anthem” pdf file
  

Procedure

1. Assign reading check question from chapter 20. Collect “author and you” questions for review.
   
   
2. Discuss highlights of chapters 20, 21, 22.
   
   
3. Read chapter 23. Discuss highlights. The final two paragraphs of this chapter lend themselves well to a discussion of how people overcome adversity.
   
   
4. Have students listen to and then read the “Negro National Anthem”. Discuss the poem’s message. Have students work with partners to identify the tone and to list words and phrases that create the tone.
