Lesson 19 - Chapter 36 and the work as a whole

Objectives

  • To identify themes in the autobiography
  • To identify examples of adversity
  • To identify examples of ways of coping with adversity

Materials

Procedure

  1. Assign reading check question from chapter 36. Collect and discuss.

  2. Lead students in a discussion of chapter 36 and the autobiography as a whole, focusing on themes and answers to the essential questions.

  3. Ask students to look back at the initial predictions for the reading. How accurate were they? Discuss.

  4. Review simile, metaphor, hyperbole, imagery. Assign students to groups and have them search for these devices, one term per group. Have them share their findings with the class.

  5. Review questioning strategies. Have students work in pairs to write two of each kind of question (plus answers) based on information throughout the text. Students should take turns asking their questions and calling on classmates to answer.
