Lesson 24 Human Rights at School

Objective

  • To evaluate the human rights climate of the school

Materials

Procedure

  1. Follow lesson as outlined in “Taking the Human Rights Temperature of Your School”
http://160.94.193.60/hrmaterials/temperature/tempprint.htm or use the alternative activity below.

Alternative Activity

Tell students that they will participate in an activity called “line-up.” Establish space in the room wide enough for the students to stand in one long line. Tell students that the imaginary line will be numbered from one to ten. Students will be asked to find a place to stand on the line based on how much they agree or disagree with the issue being discussed. Mark one end of the line as “one” and the other end as “ten.” Tell students that they will be discussing the twenty-five items that they responded to on “temperature” activity.

Explain that you will read an item and that students will need to find their place on the line. Tell students that the “one” end represents “firmly disagree” and the “ten” end represents “firmly agree.” They may choose those extremes or any place between them. Obviously, the mid point of the line, five/six spot, represents indecision. Encourage students to try to be as decisive as possible.

Begin by reading item number one from the “temperature” assignment. Students will line up. Ask for three of four volunteers to justify their positions, that is, explain why they chose to stand where they did as opposed to the opposite side of the line. (My students loved doing this!)
