| Supports
and structures for weaker readers and writers.
Vocabulary will be taught before reading; directions will
be brief and specific. Students may be given lists of words
with definitions and sample sentences and will be allowed
extra time to complete vocabulary quizzes. Teacher will
provide frequent summaries of reading material. Students
may be given printed summaries of chapters and will be allowed
extra time to complete all assignments and tests related
to the reading
Differentiation
The gifted student could be assigned to research areas
of special interest or to read ahead of the group and then
read additional work by the author.
The use of “anchor activities” and the planning
of in-class work time might allow these students to move
ahead while others were granted more time. Special-needs
students could benefit from the in-class work time as well
because they could then receive the additional help needed
to be more successful. Another way to differentiate might
be to allow or direct struggling students to use on-line
study guides. (See Resources &
Copyright page; note "Pinkmonkey," "Sparknotes,"
and "Gradesaver" sites.)
