Weekly Calendar:

Week 1:          

  • Teacher will introduce and instruct students on the use of Microsoft Word and document format.
  • Teacher will explain the definition of family traditions.
  • Teacher will lecture on forms of figurative language, including metaphor, simile, personification, and symbol.
  • Students will brainstorm about their family traditions.

Week 2

Week 3:

  • Teacher will introduce and instruct students on the use of Internet research.
  • Students will use the Internet for preliminary research on the Mexican Revolution. (external link)

  • Students will participate in a class discussion addressing the essential questions.
  • Teacher will introduce Magical Realism.
  • Students will use the dictionary to look up definitions for the vocabulary words.
Weeks 4-7:
  • Teacher will lecture on connotative language and distinguish denotative and connotative meanings.
  • Teacher will lecture on the Mexican Revolution.
  • Students will share their summaries with the class (oral report).
  • Students will view the film Viva Zapata
  • Teacher will review reciprocal teaching with students.
  • Students will work in small groups using reciprocal teaching as they read through the book.

Weeks 8-9:

  • Teacher will distribute guided reading worksheets and explain the types of questions (right there, pulling it together, author and me, and on my own).

  • Workshop:  Students will work on visual essay.

Week 11:

  • Students will orally present visual essays to the class.
