day represents 55 minutes
DAY ONE: "The
Universal Declaration of Human Rights" Animated Video.
(Amnesty International USA , Universal Declaration of Human
Rights: http://www.hrusa.org).
Introduce the unit by giving an overview. Ask students if
they have any ideas about how Native American rights (re:
the video just viewed) may have been violated by the coming
of Europeans to this continent.
DAY TWO: Video: "Nomads
of the Dawn" which portrays the coming of pre-Neolithic
peoples to the Americas, from Asia. (Video: Native Land, Nomads
of the Dawn, Primal Mind Foundation: in association with Alvin
H. Perlmutter, Inc. and Native Land Foundation 1996; available
Moraga Library, Contra Costa County).
DAY THREE: Read "The
Coming of the Pink Cheeks" (about the ruin of the
culture of a tribe in Kenya in the 1950's due to the coming
of the British. It is included as a microcosm of the exploitation
of indigenous peoples. ( Chief Kabongo, as told to Richard

Homework: complete a dialectical journal comprised of two
vertical lists:
(a) What did the Kikuyu people "gain" from the
coming of the Europeans?
(b) What did the Kikuyu people "lose" from the
coming of the Europeans?
DAY FOUR Continue watching "Nomads

DAY EIGHT: In groups of 3-5, students collaborate

DAY ELEVEN: Pass back corrected tests. Read from p.
40-46
DAY TWELVE: Begin in-class work on the Totem Cord
Project. Teacher supplies 4-foot long strips of cotton laundry
line , one per student, 7-8 skeins of varicolored yarn, and
needles and thread. Students wrap their cords neatly and carefully,
and then sew on the items they have selected to represent
themselves (see TotemCordAssigmt.doc

DAY THIRTEEN: Read from p. 46-52, then turn the class
over to the Totem Cord Project
DAY FOURTEEN: Read from p. 53-60; review oral questions,

DAY FORTY SIX: .Read out loud in class: teacher's
sample essay on Old Betonie. Watch the rest of Navajo Boy.
Discuss parallels between book and video: especially regarding
uranium mining and the explosion of nuclear weapons on Indian
Land.
DAY FORTY SEVEN: Read from page 225 to 236 . Students
get together in groups to design questions about this section.
