Genocide
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
In this lesson, students are asked to act as historians in order to answer the question, "How many genocides have there been in the Twentieth Century?"

TIME ALLOTMENT
Depending on the degree of research the teacher wishes students to do, this lesson can be as brief as three days or as long as several weeks.

TECHNOLOGY USE

Teachers will need access to computers for students to conduct internet research, as well as to conduct the opening exercise.

EXPLICIT UNIT GOALS


Essential Learning

Students will learn that mass killings have been a common occurrence in the Twentieth Century.

Skills

1. Students will distinguish between primary and secondary sources and assess the usefulness of each n conducting historical research.

2. Students will apply facts to the definition of "genocide" and determine whether the elements of the definition are satisfied.

Knowledge
Students will become familiar with the basic facts of the following historical events:

1. The early Twentieth Century mass killings of Armenians by Turks.
2. The Ukrainian famine of the 1930s
3. The Nazi extermination campaign against European Jews
4. The mass killings by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia
5. The events in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
6. The mass killings of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda in the 1990s.
