Lesson 2a/4a – Teacher’s Lesson Plan – Map Making Exercise

Book:  Rage in Harlem or other mystery/detective fiction by Chester Himes.

Grade Level:  11/12

Essential Question:  Why was Harlem an attractive place for African Americans to live?

Connection to Standards:  Writing: Research and Technology 1.6 (11/12) and 1.5 and 1.3

Technology:  The computer is used as a research and graphic tool, linking technology to synthesize information and to communicate graphically

Lesson Plan Content

1) The student will search for and locate a map of upper Manhattan which includes Harlem.

2) In both the Web Quest assignment (Lesson 2) and the reading of Rage in Harlem or other Himes book set in Harlem the student will note locations important a) to Harlem residents and b) in the Himes mystery. 

(Note: http://webpages.shepherd.edu/ltate/HarlemMap.htm contains a complete map of Harlem of the 1930’s including important sites)

3) The work can be posted in the classroom and/or evaluated according to the following rubric either by the students or the teacher.
