SECOND
SEGMENT ON HUMAN RIGHTS (continued)
DAY THREE:
- Put students into seven well-balanced groups.
Distribute copies of Chapter 5, When Human Rights
Abuses Occur: What Can Be Done?,pages 93-110,
from the book, Human Rights for All, O'Brien,
et al, published by National Institute for Citizen
Education in the Law (1996). Have the groups review
the packets. Then assign one of the seven problems,
one to each group to the extent possible. The problems
ask students to determine the correct venue to address
specific Human Rights abuse issues. Have each group
explain their solution by creating a poster; this
is a good presentation to use either power point
or the Edu-cart if you have that facility. Each
group should present their problem and solution
over the next few days. During presentations all
other students should evaluate the solution in five
sentences or more in their journal. Once all problems
are presented, have everyone write about two abuse
issues, their own and another and in five paragraphs
do a compare and contrast essay as to the problems
and solutions and how world peace is affected.
- Provide some time for research and review of
the investigation for the second Human Rights term
paper. (Provide this time periodically throughout
your next few units.)
- Distribute and discuss the procedures and expectations
for the week of presentations in the Mock UN Sessions.
