SEGMENT TWO : MOCK SESSIONS OF THE UNITED NATIONS:

This set of lessons should be carried out as much as possible in simulation mode of the sessions of the United Nations. Do some homework reading which reviews the procedures of the several relevant UN bodies. Assign leaders and discuss their roles with them ahead of time.

Review and conference with each team to prepare for the exposition.

Leaders need your guidance and your overview of issues and proposals to be presented.

Set the classroom into a semicircle with your leaders in front. Allow the presentations to take place with as little teacher intervention as possible.

Each evening have students write three paragraph essays reflecting on the connection of the essential question(s) and the day¯s presentations.

Set aside class time to have the leaders meet each day to begin deliberations on the proposals. Periodically allow the UN to deliver their opinions on the proposals.

Finally, have the entire class discuss the several proposals and ask that the class come to consensus on each proposal; should it be shelved, amended, funded? Create a poster to record the class decision on each proposal.

Assign one last reflection essay on the entire unit, students pick one proposal and discuss it the context of the UDHR and the quote about its purpose, does it work? Again, have students complete a Project Debriefing sheet.
