SUPPORTS AND STRUCTURES FOR WEAKER READERS AND WRITERS
  1. The daily reflection/free writes are reviewed regularly and help the weaker reader and writer gain confidence because they get feedback and points for their thoughts and opinions but do not lose points for error. However, the review allows the teacher to give confidential feedback on error on a daily basis and to possibly set up a plan for correction of repeated errors. Another ongoing strategy is the student's reflection journal, an ongoing journal that can be reviewed in whole and in bits to track improvement and to encourage note taking and engagement in ideas.
  2. The Anticipation Guide is designed as a support for weak readers and writers. Review Forget's work to learn rationale of this strategy.
  3. The term papers are set up to be done in drafts so there will be a process of consistent and repeated review and feedback. Peer review is built in as a way to teach reviewer and reviewed.
  4. The checklists and the rubrics are given to students before the lesson so the student is aware of the benchmarks and expectations.
