Emphasis On Writing & Technology Integration

The Content Standards prepare the students to think critically, engage in meaningful dialogue, and write ethical, moral, and meaningful responses to the essential question.

  • Reading Comprehension Standards: Students will look for markers, e.g. ethical, moral values, social justice issues, and political aspects of the novel.

  • Listening/Speaking Standards: The students will also engage in meaningful dialogue about how words are used to humiliate and redeem one's character.

  • Literary Responses & Writing Standards: Students will learn to identify main ideas, use main ideas to draw inferences, generalizations, and conclusions about the novel. In effort to strengthen their critical thinking skills, the students will compose a journal using textual evidence. They will also compose an employment portfolio including student resumes, recommendation letters, awards, an autobiographical piece, and business cards designed by the student. The mock orals and dress for success interviews are designed to prepare the student for high school exiting and future employment. Hence, this unit is designed to aid students in developing their critical thinking, reading comprehension, oral speaking, and writing skills.

The Reading Comprehension Standards that frame the series of lessons and assignments include:

  • ELD Standards: Level 9-12
  • EI: Read own writing of narrative and expository… aloud with appropriate pacing, intonation, and expression.
    • B: Use a standard dictionary for to determine the meaning of unknown words.
  • ELA Standards: Level 9-10
    • · 2.8: Evaluate the credibility of an author's argument …by critiquing the relationship between generalizations and evidence…(primary source material).

The Listening/Speaking Standards that frame the series of lessons and assignments include:

  • ELA Standards: Level 9-10
    • 2.1:Deliver narrative presentations: narrate a sequence of events and communicate their significance to the audience.

The Writing Strategy Standards that frame the series of lessons and assignments include:

  • ELA Standards: Level 9-10
    • 1.9: Revise writing to improve the logic and coherence of the organization and controlling perspective, the precision of word choice and the tone by taking into consideration the audience, purpose, and formality of the context.

The Literary Responses that frame the series of lessons and assignments include:

  • EI: Read and use detailed sentences to orally explain the literary elements of theme, plot, setting, and characters.
