Concluding Assignments:
- Using their books and charts, students write expository
essays answering the essential question: How does an author
create a character? See instructions for writing the essay:
The Characterization
of Manny Hernandez in Parrot in the Oven.

- (Optional) Students also answer Parrot
in the Oven Study Questions

Evaluation:
Teacher commentary and reflection
Two essential questions form this unit.
The first, “How does the author create a character?”
addresses the literary concern of a ninth grade California
State Standard.
The second, “What role do guns play in our society?”
concerns the immediate issue of the harm they cause human
beings by directing students to research both pro and anti-gun
sources and write a persuasive essay, which is another of
the required high school achievements.
The students who have completed this unit mostly come
from a low socioeconomic background. The quality of their
work is judged by the included rubrics.
GATE students are sufficiently challenged by this unit
as is evident by the quality of the student essays, and
other special needs students are aided by the moderate pace
and the scaffolding afforded by making sure that everybody
has their charts complete, by providing essay outlines,
and by providing shared research articles.
